Truth: Paczki!

I've got nothing against tradition...but what's the point of these things? No offense to my Polish friends but these things aren't that good. A giant mound of sugar filled with more sugar. Can you say heart attack or diabetic coma?

  1. Dammit Dino you are everywhere! I was looking up a recipe for Paczki, well more specifically Ponchik, which is the Russian variation and it hit on your blog since I have you added on Google Plus. Thus, I could not resist commenting on the matter of your blog even though the content was old.

What is your beef with Paczki? American jelly donuts are an even more sugary rip off of Polish Paczki. American donuts are glazed which require more sugar to make a small amount of glaze than the light dusting of sugar contained in the outside of the Paczki. In fact, some traditional Paczki are not even dusted with powdered sugar a all, instead some are dusted with orange zest which are little shavings of orange rind.

Also Paczki dough contains much less sugar and zero corn syrup compared to American donuts. In fact, being that corn is subsidized in the US, corn syrup is the most common sweetener in America and corn syrup is worse for you that cane sugar. This is because corn syrup cause much higher glucose spikes after consumption than cane sugar which runs a higher risk of diabetes and widening of the blood vessels which can lead to a whole host of other circulatory problems!

Further Dino, Paczki traditionally are filled with Powidla which is a type of jam that is made with plums that contains much less sugar than American jams and preserves. This is is because alcohol is added to powidla which acts as preserve, thus sugar is only needed to taste instead of a requirement of preservation!

This is probably why Americans tend to be more over weight and have higher instances of diabetes in comparison to their Eastern European counterparts! In short Eastern Europeans rule and more specifically Russians rule! As much as I like Paczki, Russian Ponchik is better as often it contains a cream filling in addition. Thus Ponchik crushes Paczki like a bug!
