Truth: Elton vs. Billy

This is an email thread I had with some friends. I've removed their names to protect their guilt. My work is never done.
Topic: Billy Joel and Elton John - Sell outs. That's the crux of this.

Rod Stewart
Elton John
Billy Joel

These guys were great..then they sold out, and became cartoon characters of themselves. It happens when you get old.

Yeah, If they are as bad as Dino says they are they are still doing pretty well...selling out everywhere they go.

That's because their good stuff is still good. Which is all their old stuff.

My point exactly.

Your point doesnt address that they are currently cartoons of themselves who havent made good music since 1980.

Elton has since 1980...I guess the main point is they are so good...they don't have to do much new. Why should they?

Billy Joel song: The Entertainer. circa 1979
"So I learned to dance with my hand in my pants.
They rub my neck and I write 'em a check
and they go their merry way."

I lived the starving artist life for a while. I had my integrity. I was happy. I was starving to death. Selling out is something you do if you have the opportunity before you die. Anybody that gets to be a one hit wonder for a few weeks probably put years if not decades into it before it sold. Go ahead and call out the bad music they make but we all have the right to sell. I wish a buyer for everyone.

Greed is good, capitalism is great. I'm not knocking them for cashing out. I'm knocking the fact they now suck.

Point is ...I think most would disagree with you.

American Idol is good tv, it's not. That is not the point. The point is their music of the last 20 years or so has been terrible. It's Celine Dion pop junk. Those 3 guys were cutting edge, they created good stuff. Their lyrics, their music shaped what good rock and roll was. Then I have to hear the theme song from Legal Eagles? Uptown Girl? The theme from the Lion King? GARBAGE!

David, the NFL is America's pastime, and you admittedly don't like it. You can't have it both ways.
