Dear Hockeydino,
Robbed by Facebook? I’m a self proclaimed Facebook addict. I admit it. I love it.
Robbed by Facebook? I’m a self proclaimed Facebook addict. I admit it. I love it.
Being a Facebook addict isn’t always fun & friend requests. It comes with criticism, computer viruses and if you’re lucky maybe even a home invasion.
Last November, while visiting a college for the weekend with my daughters, my house was robbed. I was shocked and devastated. I live in a small town that hasn’t seen much crime in years. After several interviews from the local detective we were asked if anyone knew if we’d be gone for the weekend. My youngest daughter says.” It was on facebook”. We instantly got the “look” as if that explained it all..
Being the loyal Facebook addict that I am, I decided to post my robbery on my Facebook page. I had many responses on my wall…people that felt really bad, people wanting to know if we were ok and giving their robbery condolences. But, what I was not expecting were the private messages that I received with harsher words about posting my life on Facebook.
Almost… insinuating that we deserved it.
“You shouldn’t post when you’re not home”
“You shouldn't’t post when you’re home alone”
“You shouldn't’t post so many personal details”
Etc, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah!!
As if I wasn’t already thinking that & didn’t feel bad enough.
What if there is just a criminal in my neighborhood?? I am sure that houses got robbed before
Facebook. If someone wants your stuff, they will take it. The police think it is someone that knows me, which is a scary thought.
After several months, lots of fingerprints and NO leads, we figured it was a random hit. This Facebook addict is MUCH more careful about posting. My life is still there, but I don’t post if I’m not home or going away for the weekend. I think first before posting and have encouraged my kids to do the same.
We were finally feeling safe in our home again and we get robbery attempt number 2 & 3. I’m sure you can guess… what is the first thing people are asking me? My answer: NO -I did not post it on Facebook!!
As of today, still no leads and I remain a faithful Facebook addict. My privacy settings are still set to the highest security, as they always were.
Was I robbed by Facebook?? Until they catch someone…we will never know.
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
Violated

Dear Violated,
I hate to say I told ya so, but I told ya so! Foursquare, Locations etc,...what's the point? It doesn't even have to be Facebook. People will just look to see if you aren't home. When I was a kid, my mom and dad told me to never tell anyone we were on vacation. Not that our friends would say anything, but they would tell their friends and so on. People that post all their information on Facebook...it's absurd. I don't get it, never have...never will. If you want to share with your close friends and family, do you really need Facebook for that? Well if you do, then tighten the security settings. Even with that it is not full proof. Anyways..I'm enjoying Google Plus. Why? Because all the fluff isn't there, and it's all about sharing content, not sharing every minute of your day like Facebook has become.
Actually I like saying I told ya so. It validates my truth. I TOLD YA SO!
