It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I recently went to a Walmart with a friend. It was painful. I have to admit, since I'm a snob. I'm arrogant, I'm a walmartaphobe...whatever. When I left, I felt dirty. I felt like I had to change my clothes and take a shower. Heebee Geebees. Cooties.
Is that wrong of me to feel that way? [inner voice - YES] Am I shallow for feeling that way?[inner voice - YES]. I know it's weird to feel that way, and to think that way [inner voice - YES]. I just do. It was the third time I have ever gone into a Walmart, and hopefully the last. Every time I've gone in, I didn't go in thinking I'd be grossed out. It just didn't dawn on me. Sort of like I don't think that third beer is going to make me feel sick until I actually drink it.
You know, I don't judge people if they don't have money. I don't judge people if they can't afford things. I just don't care. Hygiene though, that's another story. Comb your freaking hair. Wash that hoodie. Brush your teeth. Look somewhat presentable please. Pick those pants up from your knees. Flip flops in the winter? I don't want to see your feet. I don't want to see your dirty clothes. I don't want to see your lower stomach tattoo.
Look I know times are tough. I know some just can't clean up because they don't know how. They can't afford it, or they just don't know. I know that! I understand. Makes me want to buy them all clothes (from another store), and clean them up. Really...an entire store of Eliza Doolittles. What I want to do and happen vs reality is another story.
The people of Walmart play a small part in the whole perception if you ask me. I bet you see all walks of life at a Sears or Target too. It's just the store itself. It looks cheap. It looks dirty. It looks like KMart from 1975. Could be why they are all over the place, low overhead costs on presentable decor.
Here is the deal though. They are successful so most people must not care. Why don't you care? I don't care how cheap their stuff is. I would rather have a pleasant experience than be grossed out. Now if a no frills non metro-sexual super handsome and smart guy like myself can be wigged out at a Walmart...others must feel the same way.
Stereotypes don't come out of mid-air ya know.

My sister wanted to go to the Walmart in my town and I took her there. She said "you have some bad people living in your town". I said "these people aren't from this town".
ReplyDeleteWalmart is gross because if you look in the bakery aisle some of the cookies and pastries are already eaten out of the package. And the makeup and nailpolish has been used. Who wants to buy something that's been touched?
I would never go there again.
