You Virtual Link

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Friends, Followers, Circles, Connections. What?

So on Linkedin I have connections. What does that really mean?  How and why am I connected and why does a Nigerian prince want to be my connection?

On Facebook I have friends.  Are they really all of my friends?  I also have Likes...do they really like everything?

On Twitter I have followers.  Where am I leading these followers?  Facebook has followers too. They get to stalk you I suppose differently than a friend.

Now as I've stated several times the idea of circles makes the most sense from pushing content out.  Who you want to see your stuff makes sense. You can do the same on Facebook but it takes work to build lists and you have to think about it more often than not. Most people don't bother.

I have connections on Linkedin that I don't really know.  I have friends who aren't at the same friendship level as other friends. The friends label might be overused or tainted because of social networking.

There's a dynamic that exists in social media that is separate from real life. I have some social media connections from different platforms that I thoroughly enjoy speaking to and hanging out with. Some I trust more than others, some I hardly trust at all.

It's like would I have coffee with this person? No not really, but I'd engage online over a topic easy enough. Aren't we all just links anyways?
